Montserrat is a unique place. The impressive peaks on the outskirts of Barcelona seem to have been shaped for one purpose only: to be climbed. People from all over the world visit Montserrat every year to hike, climb and see the famous Montserrat Monastery located at the base of this mountain.
The main climbing area in the region is L’Aeri. Daila Ojeda says, ‘The idea to try Directa de L’amistat (8a, 280m) came from my friend Ignasi. Perhaps for those who are more accustomed to climbing long routes, this route may not seem special, but for me, this wall was impressive, and being able to climb it was a new experience.’
Ojeda later explained some of the differences she found between her normal activity and her first major climbing experience: ‘If you happen to feel tired, you can’t change your mind halfway up because you’re hanging in the middle of a big wall. You need to be very focused, motivated and ready to support your partner, and there needs to be patience and understanding between you and your partner.’ She also adds that ‘I was exhausted after this route, but it’s addictive because I loved it. It won’t be the last multi-pitch route I do.’
